About Birmingham Lions Ice Hockey
Founded in 2001, the Birmingham Lions Ice Hockey Club is a British University Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) affiliated club, representing Higher Education institutions in Birmingham (University of Birmingham, University College Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Newman University and Aston University).
We have sessions for both beginners and experienced players and also run regular socials where members can get to know each other and bond as a team. No matter your hockey or skating ability, anyone will be welcomed to our club, even if you just want to join us for the socials!
We compete at all levels and cater for all abilities from those that have never skated before to those that have played for years! We pride ourselves on being inclusive club that has experienced great success in previous years. 48% of our registered players were female in the 2019/20 season, despite traditionally being a male dominated sport. We also have many players who are openly part of the LGBTQ+ community as well as having a large proportion of international players.
These strides we have made as a club to create a diverse and inclusive team has led to us being nominated for the UBSport ‘Pride Award’ for 2 years running.
Training is at Planet Ice in Solihull which is a 20-minute drive from The Guild of Students.

Membership:
Birmingham Lions Ice Hockey team is coordinated by the University of Birmingham.
During the first semester, members pay a standard membership fee of £8.00 alongside a non-BUCS insurance card*, currently priced at £22.00. They then pay individually for sessions at Planet Ice. The £8 membership fee goes directly towards activities for BCU students. This membership expires automatically at the end of the semester. Ice skate rentals are included within the pay-as-you-go skate sessions during this first semester.
During the second semester (following the Christmas break), members who wish to continue will need to purchase a second semester membership, with prices being determined prior to the Christmas break and will be disclosed to beginners via in-person sessions and the Lions' Facebook page. Typically, second semester fees range from £110-125. Full gear is required to continue into second semester (details of gear required will be posted duirng the Christmas break). Gear will need to be brought by the member, or can be rented from the limited club gear we have available at the time (on a first come, first serve basis).
Any new members who haven't already purchased their non-BUCS insurance card* would need to do so at this point. The full fee (minus any payment for a non-BUCS card) goes into a central pot, managed by the University of Birmingham, and covers fees associated with the society moving forwards.
(* You only purchase a non-BUCS card once per academic year, regardless of how many societies you join which require one.)
