The University recently published new guidelines on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in assessments. It’s vital to know what you can and can’t do and how you can protect yourself from allegations of academic misconduct.

The guidelines contain a really useful list to help you show that you have produced your own work honestly as well as a handy set of FAQs.

Evidence for using AI

The university has access to software to help detect the use of AI in assignments. If suspected of AI misuse you may be asked about the process you undertook in producing your assignment, so it is recommended that you keep:

  1. Drafts of your work to show the process/stages of your research and writing (see Q11 in the FAQs).

  2. Screenshots of any AI prompts used to help you with the research/planning stages of your work.

Key points

  • Unless specified otherwise, do not use AI in assessments

  • Generative AI tools that 1) create sentences, 2) predict sentences, or 3) substantively rewrite your sentences (such as Grammarly's Generative AI assistance, Wordtune, Paperpal etc.), are not permitted (see Q4 in the FAQs)

  • Unauthorised AI use is considered academic misconduct

  • Work is checked by an AI detector tool

  • Make sure you can show the process you undertook in producing your assignment

  • Read the guidelines in full!

Additional support

Support with understanding how to avoid AI misuse is available through Centre for Academic Success (CAS), the Academic Development Department (ADD) at HELS, or your Personal/Academic Tutor.
