Students are growing more concerned about ethical and environmental issues, whether it be: decolonisation, energy usage, biodiversity, or fair labour conditions in their supply chain, these all fall under the umbrella of sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Want to improve sustainability at BCU? Your Students’ Union can provide a range of ways to spark your passion for improving sustainability.
What is sustainability?
The goal of Sustainability is being able to reach our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Many people link the term sustainability to environmentalism and natural resources, however, it is also important to consider social and economic resources which create the opportunity for a more equitable future.
How can I get involved?
If you're environmentally conscious and want to improve your local community at University, you can join some societies at BCUSU:
Sustainability Society
Start and drive campaigns at BCU to help make your University more sustainable and tackle the climate emergency. The Sustainability Society is one of our Liberation Societies, meaning it's free to join and is funded by your Students' Union. The Society is currently looking to fill its remaining committee positions! Committee members will be working closely with BCUSU and BCU's Environmental Team to make real change to our community. Go Green at BCU
Initiatives like Go Green Week and Waste Awareness Week is a week of dedicated to events centered around sustainability, such as drop-in sessions, Waste and Recycling Fairs and more...
This year your Students' Union introduced oat milk as the primary milk used for all hot barista drinks at the Eagle & Ball and The Social Kitchen as a trial for a larger implementation throughout BCUSU outlets.
What are the Sustainable Development Goals?
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
