What is a Peer Navigator?

BCUSU and BCU have teamed up to run a pilot Peer Navigator scheme for during 2024/25. As this is a pilot project, only 10 courses will be taking part over 16 weeks.

Peer Navigators will help to support first year students with their transition into university life by hosting weekly support sessions for a maximum group size of 20 first year undergraduate students on the same course as themselves. We are recruiting a total of 105 Peer Navigators, to support over 2,000 first-year students.

What sort of experience do you need?

You do not need any previous experience to become the Peer Navigation Supervisor, however strong organisation and communication skills will be key to this role.

Full role training and on-the-job support will be provided by BCUSU and BCU.

What will you need to do?

Your role will be to supervise and support the Peer Navigators, along with the two Project Leads, Course Leaders and Life Coaches. You will administrate the scheme, including signing off timesheets, completing right to work checks, and other duties outlined by BCUSU Head of Engagement.

You will also prepare Peer Navigators for their role by delivering training and ongoing supervision and support.

Why should you apply?

This is a great opportunity to significantly impact students’ experience starting at university by supporting Peer Navigators to run sessions for them.

You will gain valuable experience in organising and supporting student staff members. You will also gain strong experience in communication skills by communicating with various stakeholders.

You will also receive paid training and ongoing support to help you do this role effectively.

Who are we looking for?

We’re looking for a student that is:

  • Well organised and has a good level of attention to detail
  • Has good, clear communication skills and is able to communicate effectively with different people
  • Has a friendly and supportive attitude

We are committed to developing a diverse and inclusive scheme that benefits our students and therefore, for this pilot project, we are actively encouraging applications from those who are Black, Asian and/or Mature students.
