Review

Your idea will be picked up by Kristina Patel, Vice President Student Voice. She will discuss your idea at Executive Committee, with your Officer Team and BCUSU Senior Management. In this meeting your idea will be approved or rejected, you will be notified directly with the outcome. See below for how decisions will be made.

If your idea is approved, it will be published live on our Ideas Board. Students can vote to agree (👍) or disagree (👎) and you can comment to add your thoughts on the idea....

When your idea gets 930 positive votes from BCU students, the Executive Committee will allocate ownership of the idea based on who’s role is more suitable. You will be notified in the comments on how the idea will move forwards.

What makes a good idea?

Changes to the process for applying for the Financial Assistance Fund ✔️ Would require working with the relevant team to streamline a University process. Or could involve implementing a new process which may be a long-term project that required investment and resources
More breaks in engineering lab sessions This is a course specific idea, which would be best resolved by contacting your Course Rep, who would then add it to the Feedback Hub
Request to have more counsellors with specific remits in University’s Mental Health & Wellbeing Team (such as a sexual abuse counsellor) ✔️ Isn’t something which BCUSU have control over, as the team is managed by the University. This idea getting 930 votes would give our Officer Team a strong argument to give to the University for extra funding for this type of role`
Requesting to rearrange their individual timetable This is a student’s individual academic issue, which would be handled by department/school staff. Our Advice Team could support if they’re struggling with handling the issue
Calling for more social spaces on campus ✔️ This is something that would require involvement from multiple areas across the University and funding. The University may require a high student mandate to invest in a project like this

    Sensory Rooms in City Centre and City South campuses

      All universities have a selection of neurodiverse students (students who are Autistic, ADHD, Dyslexic, etc) and legally have to cater to these students' differences from their neurotypical counterparts under the Equality Act. Typically, this is done through providing additional support for these students, such as additional time and smaller rooms of people for exams. While this works for some of our differences, it doesn't cater for all of our divergences. We have other difficulties as well, such as sensory difficulties: overstimulation from uncontrollable sensory input which can lead to meltdowns or shutdowns, or simply discomfort. While these don't sound like much to neurotypical people, these can also cause physical pain to neurodiverse people. Some effort can be put into making an environment less overstimulating, such as using less intense lighting with softer colour temperatures, making rooms less loud (by not having unnecessary music playing or ensuring people aren't being as loud), however this doesn't eradicate our sensory issues. Even when the space is as ideal as you can make it, there are still uncontrollable external factors from the outside to other people which can still trigger a meltdown/shutdown. These would be a safe space for students to visit when their senses are too much for them and they're struggling to cope with the real world, with a controlled atmosphere in terms of low external noise & smells, and soft lighting. They should also be kitted out with sensory apparatus: bean bags and other soft, safe furnishings, stim tools, etc. There is currently nowhere for students to go when overstimulation occurs, leading to them having to go to a quieter space which isn’t ideal as they may block entry/exit routes or accessible areas. As the Neurodiverse Society, if you support our mission to make this a reality, please vote on this.     12:49pm on 20 Jul 23 The Student's Union has agreed to have Sensory Rooms which is aimed to be completed by September 2023. The Curzon Building will have a Sensory Room in C156, which is behind the Student's Union reception, and for the Seacole Building, the Sensory Room will be located in SCT083. These sensory rooms will be available by ways of specific reasonable adjustments through the Disability Support Summary (DSS).
