    On-site childcare/nursery facilities

    Current
    • Support and Wellbeing
    Objective:

To establish an on-site nursery for students to support them in managing both academic commitments and childcare. This will especially benefit those on placements, including social work students like myself, by reducing stress and financial pressures, while ensuring success in their studies.

    Rationale:
    1. Support for Student-Parents: Many students face challenges in balancing childcare with the demands of their studies, especially during placement periods. An on-site nursery would provide convenient, affordable care, allowing students to focus on their academic and professional growth.

    2. Maximise Placement Opportunities: For students on placements, particularly those in social work and other practical courses, the nursery could offer an ideal setting to gain experience in early years development, benefiting their learning and career readiness.

    3. Cost of Living: With rising living costs, affordable on-site childcare would ease financial burdens, making it easier for student-parents to complete their education without compromising on their academic or professional goals.

    Training & Development:
The nursery would also offer students the chance to gain practical experience, particularly for those in courses related to child development, while attending placements, enhancing their learning and future employability.

    Conclusion:
An on-site nursery would make a significant difference in the lives of student-parents across all disciplines. It would provide essential support, increase student retention, and create an inclusive, family-friendly learning environment.

Discuss

You will be contacted by one of the Activities and Representation Coordinators to discuss your idea and make any relevant changes to it.

Vote

Your idea then goes live, here on the Ideas Board for other students to vote and comment.

It will be live until:

  • it reaches 25 positive votes
or your idea has been live for 6 months (whichever comes first)
  • Students can vote with a thumbs up (agree) or thumbs down (disagree)
  • Votes and comments will help the Executive Officer team make decisions

Action

If your idea reaches the 25-positive vote threshold:

  • it will be handed over to the Executive Officer team for review
  • they will discuss the idea and decide what action to take
  • the comments section will be updated with the agreed upon actions

If an idea is raised to hold an Executive Officer to account, and it gains 25 positive votes, it will be reviewed at Scrutiny Group.
