Staff, students, graduates and members of the public are invited to the VC concert for Vice-Chancellor Professor David Mba on Thursday 31 October at the Bradshaw Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (RBC).
Titled Deep River: Celebration of Black History, expect an evening of music exploring the intimate relationships between composers and their influences. There will be performances from students and alumni, and the concert will consist of collaborations and solo works from vocal and saxophone departments, as well as strings, jazz and chorus.
These performances include works that reveal the personal inspirations behind iconic compositions, whether through direct mentorship, cultural surroundings or emotional bonds.
Alumnus of the Year Casey Bailey, who is a poet, writer and educator, and former Birmingham Poet Laureate, will also perform poetry at the concert.
Compered by actor, singer and dancer Hervé Goffings and long-serving member of RBC Visiting Lecturer in Voice Maureen Brathwaite, Deep River promises a memorable inaugural concert for Professor David Mba celebrating Black History Month at BCU.
Themed refreshments can be enjoyed at a drinks reception prior to the performance, from 5pm. The concert will begin at 6pm and is due to finish at around 7pm. Boult’s Bar will be open for attendees who wish to stay for drinks after the concert.
