The University administers funds for students who are in financial difficulty. This includes the Financial Assistance Fund which is for students who may be considering leaving their course due to hardship or unexpected financial issues. More details and the form can be found on iCity.

If you originally requested less than the maximum and have changed your mind, you can do this via your student finance account.

  • Click on ‘change your application’
  • Then ‘change the loan amount you have already applied for’
  • This will take you to a "Maintenance Loan Request form" which you complete and send to Student Finance England, PO Box 210, Darlington DL1 9HJ.

Here’s a checklist mainly aimed at undergraduate students from the UK but some of the tips also apply to postgraduate and international students:

  1. Check your maintenance loan - double-check to make sure you are receiving the correct amount via this student finance calculator.

  2. Open a Student Bank Account - all of the main banks including have student bank accounts offering interest free overdrafts.

  3. Look for a part-time job - here’s our guide to where to look for part-time work.

  4. Apply to the Financial Assistance Fund - students can apply to this university fund to seek help with living costs.

  5. Make a budget - this is vital to ensure you get accurate picture of your finances and how you may be able to reduce your expenditure.
