What is Scrutiny Panel?
Scrutiny Panel is a student-led meeting which takes place at least three times each academic year. It provides a platform for any student to hold our Officers, who are elected by you each year, to account on their work towards their manifesto goals.
The purpose is for the Panel to constructively feed back on behalf of students, and to collectively achieve shared priorities.
How do meetings work?
Every year, we elect a panel of students and a Student Voice Facilitator who are trained to hold the Officer Team to account. We teach them about the role of an Officer and the areas on which they may be scrutinsed.
At BCUSU, our Officers are three things:
- an employee of our organisation
- a trustee of a registered charity, responsible for ensuring we are operating correctly
- and an elected representitive of the student body
Scrutiny Panel are concerned with how Officers are representing students as an elected representative. Before meetings, they receive a report from each Officer about their work towards their manifesto pledges, and an update on their work on submissions to our Ideas Board.
If it is considered that an Officer is under-performing, the Panel could sanction an Officer.
Can I ask a question?
All BCU students have the opportunity to ask a question to the Officer team, via Scrutiny Panel.
This could range from a straightforward question about their work, asking for information on a specific Idea submission or a request for the Panel to take more definitive action against an Officer.
The way all of these areas work is explained in for form linked below - click the button to ask your question.
